Soteria Battery Innovation Group Acquires Elegus Technologies’ Solution for Increased Cycle Life of Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion cells generate both moisture and hydrofluoric acid with age, which the cells break down over time. Elegus Technologies, founded as a spin-out of University of Michigan, has developed a technology that uses nano-aramid fibers, which enables the separator to immobilize these harmful elements in the cell, reducing the rate of degradation and extending the life of the cell. This is extremely important for applications such as automotive, aerospace, and stationary energy storage.

“Commercializing innovative technologies is one of the toughest things a startup in the lithium-ion battery industry can do,” said John Hennessy, CEO and Co-Founder of Elegus Technologies. “Soteria’s approach of providing broad access through a global license and consortium platform makes them an ideal partner to bring our technology to market. We have seen a clear synergy between our materials and their aramid-based separator . “

“Capturing the chemicals that are a major cause of battery degradation will enable battery manufacturers to bring higher energy density cells to the lithium-ion market that would otherwise degrade quickly,” said Brian Morin, Soteria CEO. “Elegus’ technology is coupled with Soteria’s separator to create a smart, active separator, rather than the passive separator materials used today.

Soteria’s Dreamweaver fleece battery separators use aramid fibers for increased thermal and chemical stability and prevent the separator from melting or shrinking in the event of a defect or damage. Elegus’ technology can be combined with the Dreamweaver separator without disrupting the standard cell manufacturing process. This means that the technology can be implemented on today’s Gigafactory lines and enables widespread adoption without investing in additional equipment or manufacturing lines.

The open innovation consortium and the license structure of Soteria create a hub for the broad availability of new technologies for the battery industry. With the natural synergy of the Elegus technology with the Dreamweaver separator, the advance towards batteries with higher energy density can be realized without compromising longevity or safety.
