The New Orleans Saints are the newest customer for the 3D camera technology in their training facility, which helped promote LSU to their 2019 national championship.
Perch co-founder Jacob Rothman recently met with the New Orleans Saints and Head strength and conditioning trainer Dan Dalrymple to install their 3D camera technology in the team’s training facility in Metairie.
New Orleans has chosen to become the newest team in Louisiana to use Perch technology to help players train smarter and reduce the risk of injury. Who was the first team in the state to use Perch? The 2019 FBS National Championship Team from Baton Rouge, the LSU Tigers.
WHAT IS PERCH?
Jacob told me that Perch is “a camera system that you put on a dumbbell rack and it gives you more detailed feedback on how you are actually lifting in the weight room, such as reducing the risk of injury and optimizing performance.”
The device consists of three components:
- 3D camera that is attached to each dumbbell rack with a few Velcro straps,
- Battery and,
The latter adhere to a magnet.
For example, before using a device, the player logs in on the tablet and starts lifting. Perch’s 3D camera tracks the player’s movements during training and instantly displays their metrics – such as sets, reps, speed and power output – on the tablet.
Players and coaches can access training data via a web and mobile app. Trainer Damrymple can, for example, access data from Demario Davis or Cam Jordan’s training sessions and help support the Saints defensive stars in improving their future training sessions.
“When you get into the weight room, there is no similar experience,” said Rothman. He continued, “All of this information is being overlooked. So we wanted to go in and provide more data and feedback so a trainer could provide more detailed information about the prescriptions in the weight room.”
NFL players and teams are always looking for an edge over the competition. Technological advances in the weight room lead to more dynamic performances on the soccer field.
I wanted to know Rothman’s thoughts on what a player like Alvin Kamara could expect from using Perch when comparing 2020 versus 2021 performance.
“Yes, so there are a lot of really good uses for the technology. Now that I’ve just met with the Saints, I can give you a few specific examples,” noted Rothman.
He described how Perch’s measurement of reps in the weight room and the amount of weight of each athlete could dictate the correct amount of maximum weight, angle, speed, strength, percentage ratings, and meters per second to a coach during each player training session.
Athletes like NFL players are extremely competitive. “They compete. They want to see who can lift the most weight above a certain speed. Now you have this objective data for athletes to compete. They are super competitive. When it comes to technologies like AR, that’s part of it.” undervalued. but super important to coaches and athletes, especially in the NFL. The coaches want as much approval as possible from these athletes, and showing objective data and creating competition is a great way to do that. “
BARSCH focuses on elite athletes
Health and fitness are extremely important to many NFL fans. I wanted to know if Perch would one day be available to the average consumer. Well, unfortunately not that fast.
The focus is on helping top athletes in exercise programs “improve over time and objectively quantify the impact” of their training, Rothman noted. “We certainly know that the data we collect can have an impact on anyone who wants to get faster, stronger, and work better. We also. The goal is to really get into that network, ”said Rothman.
Most football teams lose speed and strength over the course of the season. After using Perch, Rothman claimed, “In the weeks leading up to the national championship, they posted the fastest times in the field, and they attributed much of that to how they adjusted their training in the weight room.”
SPORTS PROGRAMS WITH PERCH
Other NFL teams like the Chargers, Giants, Titans, Jaguars, and Dolphins have included Perch in their training programs. LSU was the first college team, but Perch added other professional and college teams to its client list – Orlando Magic (NBA), Dallas Stars (NHL), Philadelphia Phillies (MLB), San Jose Earthquakes (MLS), Columbus Crew (MLS) and Kentucky Men’s Basketball (NCAAM) among others.
The 2021-22 regular season for New Orleans will include the Perch system. Will it lead to more endurance, better performance, and more victories for the Saints?
We will see.
