Beautiful protocols and smart technology – a Nokia nursing home for better everyday life for the elderly

In the Nokia district of Taka-Lauttala in the southern Finnish region of Pirkanmaa, an intelligent care home is to be built from round wood next year, followed by three similar houses in the coming years. The houses are being built for care provider KoskiHoiva by Honkarakenne in collaboration with Hoivarakentajat, a company known for its most sensitive care homes made of log.

KoskiHoiva is expanding from home care to nursing homes

KoskiHoiva is a home care provider with approximately 100 employees and is now expanding into nursing homes. KoskiHoiva has signed a contract with Hoivarakentajat to build four block nursing homes in Pirkanmaa equipped with smart house technology. The first will be completed in Taka-Lauttala in spring 2022. The schedule for the other three houses depends on the availability of land in Tampere and Pirkkala.

“We didn’t have any nursing homes yet. We looked after around a thousand customers at home and received many inquiries to continue the customer path with our own nursing homes, ”says KoskiHoiva CEO Maija Halme. “I was asked why new units should be built – weren’t there any existing buildings? The answer is that we specifically wanted log houses and smart technology. Green values are also very important to us. In these facilities we can offer a service path that also corresponds to our nursing home concept. “

Functional, sensory devices make life easier for older people

The frame construction of the nursing home is made of Finnish round wood, which is processed by Honkarakenne. “The health and sensory properties of logs mean a lot to us, our customers and employees. Log houses are comfortable and contribute significantly to a pleasant atmosphere, ”says Halme. “With Hoivarakentajat, we have a very good understanding of the wishes and needs of the industry. This solution combines organic, traditional logs with modern intelligent solutions to ensure the safety of our residents. The aim is to guarantee happiness, quality of life and meaningfulness for older people in addition to security. “

Functional facilities for older people also encourage a self-determined life. The fresh air in log cabins makes it easier to be active and the atmosphere contributes to a good night’s sleep. When planning their homes, Hoivarakentajat attaches great importance to a pleasant and comfortable everyday life. “We are pleased about the partnership, because we can build sensor-friendly nursing homes and equip them with intelligent building technology for more comfort and comfort,” says Hoivarakentajat managing director Tarmo Kemppainen.

Finnish and ecological log construction is a valuable choice

The environmental friendliness of logs is important to KoskiHoiva. “Logs bind carbon dioxide and are therefore an environmentally friendly building material. And since geothermal energy is also used, this is a very environmentally friendly choice overall, ”says Halme. More and more builders are choosing tree trunks for construction. “The demand for healthy and climate-friendly timber construction is growing rapidly. By choosing logs, KoskiHoiva not only sets itself apart from its competitors, it also acts responsibly towards the environment, its residents and employees, ”says Project Sales Manager Honkarakenne Markus Saarelainen.

Hoivarakentajat and Honkarakenne are known for long-lasting, reliable and long-lasting log houses. “Non-settling logs are a superior building material. The compactness of the frame, the simple and quick assembly and the maintenance-free nature of the material are great advantages when building nursing homes, ”says Kemppainen. Halme is very satisfied with the cooperation between the Finnish companies. “We are a completely Finnish company. Hoivarakentajat and Honkarakenne are both Finnish. We combine our own experience in nursing services with Hoivarakentajat’s experience building a sensor-friendly nursing home construction and Honkarakenne’s expertise in lamellar logs. The aim is to offer our customers the highest possible quality. “

Good jobs make recruiting easier

In healthy, sensory log houses, you don’t have to worry about indoor air problems. A modern nursing home is also an important competitive advantage in attracting employees. Koskihoiva employees have a newfound passion for smart log homes, and a title competition for the first unit is ongoing. “Our employees are enthusiastic about the further development of our company. Thanks to job rotation, our employees can work both in home duty and in these units, ”says Halme.

The new log home will be an impressive demonstration of the care work and those who do it. “In the care sector there are always problems with staff availability. We have great people at KoskiHoiva and they enjoy working here. I am confident that we will continue to be successful in recruiting with the new service house concept. I would like to see more appreciation in the industry for the employees in view of their very valuable work. We want to be a workplace that is comfortable for employees and where they feel that they are being listened to, ”says Halme, adding that KoskiHoiva is committed to developing the entire care industry with its activities.
