Northwell Health Nurse Choir gets Golden Buzzer on ‘America’s Got Talent’

Long Island’s Northwell Health Nurse Choir secured a spot in the finals of America’s Got Talent on Tuesday night as 18 frontline nurses from 10 local hospitals wowed the judges at the Season 16 premiere.

“One word comes to mind and it’s ‘heroic’,” Judge Howie Mandel told the choir members just before hitting the Golden Buzzer to send them to the live finals later this season. The nurses – including Deer Park-born and raised Christian Montanez, 29, and Winnie Mele, 64, who has lived in Westbury since 1987 – played a medley from the 1972 R&B hit “Lean on Me” by singer-songwriter Bill Withers and Ben E. Kings 1961 “Stand by Me”, composed by King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

“It was beautiful, from the heart… it was dynamic. … It was perfection ”, praised judge Sofía Vergara.

Judge Heidi Klum told the choir that she “got a chill when you all sang”.

And Judge Simon Cowell said, “The world needs you. … People will remember this audition. I will remember this audition.”

The year-long amateur choir filmed its audition on April 12th in Los Angeles.
