Email trove shows Fauci and China health official exchanged correspondence early in the pandemic

Dr. Anthony Fauci corresponded with a Chinese health official at the start of the pandemic, acknowledging the “crazy people of the world” and vowing to “see this through together,” a new report revealed Tuesday.

The nation’s leading infectious disease expert received an email on March 28, 2020 from George Gao, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in which Gao apologized for the US and other countries making a “big mistake “By not encouraging people to wear masks from the start, like that Washington Post correspondence.

“How could I say such a word ‘big mistake’ about others? That was the journalist’s wording. I hope you understand, ”wrote Gao Fauci. “Let’s work together to get the virus out of the earth.”

The director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases replied, “I completely understand. No problem. Together we will get through it. “

The correspondence came when President Donald Trump blamed China for the coronavirus outbreak.

When Fauci was criticized for dealing with the pandemic, Gao got in touch again.

“I’ve seen some news (hope it’s fake) that [you] are attacked by some people. I hope you are well in such an irrational situation, ”wrote Gao on April 8, 2020.

Fauci replied three days later and thanked his long-time friend for his “friendly message”.

“Everything is fine, despite some crazy people in this world,” wrote Fauci, the newspaper reported.

The exchange took place among more than 866 pages of Fauci’s emails from March and April 2020 that the newspaper received through a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

In the email source, Fauci also corresponded with an executive at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a medical director for the National Football League Players Association, and documentary filmmakers who were working on a Disney-sponsored documentary about him.

In his correspondence with Gates advisor Emilio Emini, the executive raised concerns about Fauci’s health.

“I see you on TV almost every day, and while you still have a lot of energy, I am seriously worried about you,” Emini wrote in an email on April 2, 2020. “The nation and the world desperately need your leadership.”

Fauci then replied in the early hours of the following morning, saying, “I will try to be as committed as possible, given my current circumstances,” adding that he was “excited to have a collaborative and hopefully synergistic approach to COVID-19 to advance “. . “

Fauci told the Washington Post that he has a longstanding relationship with Gates, who in recent reports has been the subject of reports revealing that he has made unwanted advances to female employees at both Microsoft and its foundation.

The two speak every two weeks and stay in touch on how to get COVID-19 vaccines into the rest of the world, he said.

The email find also revealed that Fauci had been in close contact with White House officials over the two-month period, the newspaper reported.

Shortly before Easter, he exchanged emails with Marc Short, Vice President Mike Pence’s Chief of Staff, wishing Short a “peaceful and enjoyable day with your family”.

However, Fauci would publicly complain later in June that the White House had sidelined him.

“As you’ve probably noticed, the task force meetings haven’t been happening that often lately. And certainly my meetings with the President have decreased dramatically, ”he said in one Interview with Strat News in June 2020.

Fauci also expressed perplexed disbelief at the public’s fascination with him.

To an article sent to him about his “cult following” he replied that it was “really surreal”.

“Hopefully it will all stop soon,” Fauci wrote to a colleague.

In another email, Fauci forwarded a Google notification for his name that contained an article titled “Cuomo Crush and ‘Fauci Fever’ – Sexualizing These Men Is A Real Online Thing”.

“It will blow your mind. Our society is really crazy, ”Fauci wrote in an email to a blacked out recipient, encouraging them to click on the link to the article.

Fauci told the newspaper that he had received around 1,000 emails a day at one point during the pandemic.

“I got every single kind of question, mostly people who were a little confused about the mixed messages that were coming out of the White House and wanted to know what the real hit was,” Fauci said of the correspondence.

“I have a reputation for responding to people when they ask for help, even if it takes a long time. And it’s very time consuming, but I do, ”he added.
