Text description of the architects. Xueqing Road Station is located in the central area of Zhongguancun and is within two kilometers from Tsinghua University and Peking University. As a meeting point for internet companies, most of the old industrial age factories have been demolished and renewed. While Beijing The Research Institute for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (BRIMET) is one of the few survivors. Meeting the needs of emerging internet and science and technology companies is a challenge. You need a maximized work area with good ventilation, a light environment and a high-quality, active room atmosphere. Although the client’s concern was primarily the interior renovation, the design team focused on the environment outside of the project. By combining the entrance point, the entire factory building was divided into four parts by a circle and thus blends in with the surrounding area.
Free garden. Among the disadvantages of limited budget, extensive structure, and high-tech requirements, a crucial question was how to use the existing conditions to maximize office space and ensure good ventilation and lighting of the building, as well as good ventilation high quality, active room atmosphere.
Outside the project, it refers to the area around the factory, as well as the roof and construction space under the original floor. Combined with the location of the building entrance, the entire factory building was divided into four parts with a circular shape and thus integrated into the surrounding area. Under the premise of security, the room height and roof were optimally used. “We hope that every office area is surrounded by a garden so that after work the employees can enjoy a moment of relaxation while looking out the window. Of course you can also go into the garden and enjoy the sun and nature. “
Look at the sky. Upon entering the room, a large area of the skylight has been expanded and converted to guide the direction of the incoming light. The skylight was expanded to connect with the atrium so that the atrium garden was saturated with natural light. At dusk, when the lights were still warm, the skylight reflected the blue, starry sky. Part of the skylight of the old building was retained in the second half of the atrium so that the room users could feel the unique traces of the original factory building.
Spatial tension. In order to balance out the long east-west scale of the project, two spiral staircases of different shapes were designed in the atrium to disperse and organize the flow of people and to activate the room atmosphere. At the end of the atrium, the light illuminated the glass blocks that encased the freight elevator from the inside and made people linger there.
Near the spiral staircase, two open sightseeing elevators mirrored the stairs, and the structural steel frame was painted bright colors to create the visual focal point of the atrium that formed the core of the traffic. The ornate spiral staircase contrasts with the industrialized sightseeing elevator, which gives the entire space full of vitality and gives the ride up and down a feeling of fun. In the afternoon sun, when old and new met, it radiated fascinating light and shadow.
Starry sky garden. In order to cover the parking space requirements as much as possible, the original ground was excavated to the foundation of the pillars, which served as a semi-underground car park. The sunken atrium garden extends to the garage and brings a different parking experience. To maximize utilization, the roof carried almost all of the electromechanical equipment for the entire building. That is why the designer created two roof gardens with different styles and functions for leisure and gathering on the sloping roof of the main building.
The garden center was designed with solar self-luminous seats and art installations in the form of leaves and feathers. While strolling at night, the internet worker’s thoughts never wandered. The design envisaged creating a garden and a starry sky for the room users as well as the surrounding buildings and users. “When renovating the old factory building, the focus of the project is always on guaranteeing the security of the building and the structure. The optimal use of the existing structural and structural conditions is the key to a cost-effective implementation of the project. “
