HOW Mothers go back to work, the childcare places are disappearing: Kelly Pompo, a high school reading teacher, is back to work in September after taking the pandemic year to stay home with her new baby and 3-year-old. She started looking for childcare a few weeks ago. What she found was a wait of at least nine months – and that only in the places that had waiting lists. When parents like Pompo return to work, a child care system is in a state of upheaval. It was stressed out before the pandemic. Now a year of uncertainty and financial struggle has brought some providers to a predetermined breaking point. (Photo by Dennis Nett)
