The University of Washington announced on Thursday that all employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 by the fall quarter. The UW recently announced that all students must also be vaccinated before the start of autumn classes.
This requirement follows the release of new ones Masking and distance regulations in the workplace from the Washington Department of Labor and Industry. Vaccinations are given free of charge to people at UW Medicine – including at UW Medical Center – Montlake on the Seattle campus – as well as in clinics, pharmacies and many other places in Seattle and Counties Pierce and Snohomish.
“The FDA-approved vaccines – based on technology that has been in development for more than two decades – are safe and effective. Widespread vaccination is our ticket to a return to personal study and work as we create the “new normal” for our university, and we encourage you to get vaccinated as soon as possible, “wrote UW President Ana Mari Cauce and Provost Mark Richards in a message to the university community.
Faculty and staff must confirm by the autumn quarter that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to be able to work on the UW campus or in their facilities. Similar to the student requirement, employees can apply for exemptions for medical, religious or philosophical reasons.
This decision follows consultations with faculty and staff management as well as the country, and work is underway to see how this requirement will be implemented. More details on how employees can confirm their vaccination or apply for an exemption will be announced in early summer. This includes how this requirement interacts with the existing UW Medicine staff vaccine survey, as well as its application to faculty or staff who do not come to UW campus or facilities, and staff who work outside of the state.
The Ministry of Labor and Industry ‘ new instructions deals with vaccine verification and health and safety requirements for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated employees. Additional guidance is expected before the state lifts most health restrictions on June 30.
