Unvaccinated people have high risk of getting COVID-19 even with low community rates health experts say

SANTA BARBARA, California – Santa Barbara County currently has 30 active cases of COVID-19. That’s less than 44 two weeks ago. These numbers are from Santa Barbara County Public Health Health’s COVID dashboard.

While COVID-19 rates continue to decline in the community, those who are not vaccinated are still at high risk. Cottage Health’s infectious disease specialist Dr. Lynn Fitzgibbons said those who aren’t vaccinated are at similar risk as the community about three months ago.

Dr. Fitzgibbons went on to say those who have already contracted COVID-19 and have recovered should still get the vaccine.

As of Thursday, 52.3% of eligible residents and 44.2% of the population are fully vaccinated.

California plans to fully reopen on June 15, drastically reducing mask requirements for fully vaccinated individuals.
